A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who joined us on our 2017 Whistler Run.
This year, the weather was truly amazing, and we experienced Whistler at its best. Twelve cars in total came up for Whistler Rally, from all over the MBCA Northwest Region. Our outgoing Regional Director, Barry Patchett with his wife Gwen, joined us on his very first visit to Whistler, from their home on Vancouver Island. Jake and Ria Schuter, Alberta Members, came all the way from Medicine Hat, in their SLK. We were happy to welcome Sally and Larry Cole from the Seattle Section, to make it a truly Regional event. Our furthest traveler, and regular attendee, Joe Peck, flew in from Los Angeles.
A few of us chose to meet on Friday, at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal, and drive up together. It was a nice weekday cruise in light traffic along the famous Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler. Recently upgraded for the 2010 Olympics, our scenic drive around wide sweeping curves was delightful and stress-free. Our visitors had a good view of the coastal waters on one side, and forest and mountains on the other.
At Whistler’s Pinnacle Hotel, Jeff Schindler’s Event Organizers worked hard to arrange a lavish Hospitality Room to welcome our guests as they arrived. A casual dinner of light foods and some drinks, was a great way to greet everyone unwinding from a work week and a journey. Our new Section President, Matthew Peck, created a signature cocktail, the ‘Blue Star’, for the occasion.
Saturday morning, we were served a light breakfast and headed out for a scenic tour of the Whistler area, and beautiful Alta Lake. Our drive took us high above the town, where we posed with our cars for some professional style photos of our cars with Whistler and the mountains as a gorgeous backdrop. Thanks again to Matt, those photos are sure to be a wonderful souvenir. We then drove to Rainbow Park, a gloriously sunny and peaceful spot right by the lake. A picnic lunch was laid out, where we could sit out on the grass to relax and enjoy the view.
We then continued our tour back to our hotel, for a little free time to wander the village, before changing for dinner. This year, we had a very nice meal at the Alta Bistro, “a stylish space for seasonal French fare”, before taking a hotel shuttle to the very elegant Chateau Whistler, and their excellent Lounge. We were delighted to explore each other’s cultures through the samplings of Bourbon and Rye whiskeys available. Some also visited the Beer Festival, an annual Whistler event.
A few of us stayed the next day for the farmers market in the Village, while some said their goodbyes for the trip home, and others went on to explore the highway going further into the BC Interior.
Special thanks to Jeff and his Whistler Organizing Committee, especially Marion & Don Rutherford, and Linda & Gary Pullyblank, who really made it a first-class event for all of us – a colossal effort that paid off tremendously.
Thanks also, to Matt Peck who did a superb job of hosting, and made it fun. And thanks to our sponsors, Hagerty, and the MB Retail Group who generously contributed.
